ISMS does not exclude Christmas celebrations

The Inner Sydney Montessori School does not exclude Christmas celebrations for students and staff and a range of Christmas celebrations have taken place this year.
Activities this year included students singing Merry Christmas in Spanish, the playing of Jingle Bells at the final school assembly on December 8, and Christmas card making for parents.
One of the strengths of being a non-denominational school is that our students experience many cultural and religious celebrations throughout the year, including Christmas, Easter and Chanukah.

This Primary Parent Education evening is specifically aimed at those parents who are familiar with Montessori philosophy and the Stage 1 environment. Job Description

General Responsibility

The Property Maintenance Officer’s primary responsibility is to ensure that the School property (on both campuses) is kept in a tidy and serviceable condition at all times so that it is always safe and well presented to the School community and visitors. This is to be achieved in a proactive manner by adopting a structured preventative maintenance regime where appropriate, rather than just simply repairing items as they become damaged or broken.

The Property Maintenance Officer will be reporting directly to the Bursar but may also receive direction from the Principal, Principal’s Assistant and/or the OH&S Officer.
Duties

The Property Maintenance Officer is responsible for, but not limited to, the following specific duties;

- Gutters & Downpipes
o Keep clear of leaves and rubbish on a regular basis to prevent blockage and corrosion
o Engage external contractor every 6 months to clear high gutters requiring specialised access and safety equipment
o Note that the Landlord is responsible for repair or replacement of unserviceable gutters, downpipes and roofing
- Light Fittings
o Replace all light bulbs, florescent tubes and diffusers as required
o Systematically upgrade all old lights with modern, energy efficient fittings when the maintenance budget permits
- Painting
o Carry out minor painting, as required
o Arrange a staggered program for repainting of classrooms, common areas and other internal surfaces by external contractors, subject to the constraints of the annual maintenance budget
o Note that the Landlord is responsible for the painting of external walls
- Floor Coverings
o Repair or replace damaged areas, as required
o Arrange for the regular stripping and polishing of linoleum floors in classrooms and common areas
- Air Conditioning
o Repair of faulty units, as required
o Replacement of old ineffective units with new energy efficient ones, when the budget permits
- Grounds Maintenance
o Keep all paved areas, pathways & footpaths cleared of leaves and rubbish with regular sweeping
o Ensure that infrequently used areas, such as the rear passageway at Lilyfield and the Northern boundary passageway at the Smith Street campus are not overlooked
- Graffiti
o Remove any graffiti as required
- Drains & Pipes
o Clear blockages when they occur
o Keep stormwater and sewer lines clear of tree roots
- Site security
o Rectify any faulty gates, locks and fences as required to ensure that security is not compromised
- Gardens
o Keep shrubs and bushes trimmed regularly, where appropriate
o Clear gardens of weeds and rubbish, including the rear fence line at Balmain campus
o Replace plants and shrubs when necessary
o Regular watering when required
o Supervise lawn mowing at Lilyfield campus
- Bus
o Keep clean and tidy at all times
o Attend to regular mechanical servicing and maintenance
o Drive the bus as required
- Teaching materials
o Assist teaching staff in the construction of classroom materials
- OH&S
o Immediately rectify any items that pose an obvious safety threat
o Bring any items or activities that may be encountered with a potential health or safety risk to the immediate attention of the OH&S Officer
- Budget
o Assist Bursar with preparation of an adequate repairs and maintenance allowance in the Schools annual operating budget
- Landlord site inspections
o Accompany Principal and Bursar on annual site inspections with Landlord to note any works required and provide advice on maintenance that the School has carried out.
o Provide site liaison for any trades personnel commissioned by the Landlord to work on the School property.

This position is full time on stand-down during school holidays and is remunerated as a Level 2 Qualified Trade position under the Independent School NSW (Combined Non-Teaching Staff) Enterprise Agreed 2010-2011.
